“Official interest in UFO sightings was a novelty in Britain in 1954. A series of mid-air encounters involving RAF jets had shaken Whitehall and many witnesses from 1952 onwards say they were interrogated by secret government investigators. Similar official visitors in the USA– again often wearing dark glasses– became part of UFO lore during the mid-Fifties, where they are considered to be aliens in disguise.
This legend of the ‘men in black’ survives and today witnesses still claim to be visited by them. They report being asked odd questions, told not to mention their sighting in public and allege attempts to persuade them that their UFO was really something mundane–such as military aircraft.”
